Focus on What You Can Control

A number of my clients have been talking about how hard it’s been for them to get back into the swing of things after the break. It’s completely understandable that ramping back up can be challenging, especially if one is approaching their day through a lens of overwhelm and loss of control.

Why is it that on one day we feel ready to go and on others everything feels out of control?

The top three things that have been helping my clients are:

  • Taking a short break to focus on feeling grounded

  • Examining perspectives to figure out responsibility and opportunity

  • Thinking about who you want to be

Being Grounded or feeling like you are inside your body: The first step is usually noticing the swirl - that feeling that too much is going on and you are barely holding on. Once you notice that you do not feel in control, take a moment to congratulate yourself for noticing. As you pause, imagine you are breathing in a sense of calm and connection. Feel your feet, your hands, your back, the top of your head.

Examining perspectives to figure out responsibility and opportunity: One way to feel a sense of control is to change your perspective. Start by listing all the things that are bothering you. Then cross out all the things you can’t control such as the weather. Now think about what you can take responsibility for such as dressing to feel comfortable based on the weather. And now think about any opportunities that come from your list. Continuing with the weather theme, is there an opportunity to take advantage of the weather for an outdoor activity or a virtual one?

Thinking about who you want to be: Another powerful technique for regaining control is to connect with your values and who you want to be. Imagine your preferred self some time in the future. What are they doing? What advice do they have for you? How are they living up to your values? What new perspective could you take to find an opportunity in your current situation?

When we feel grounded and in line with who we want to be, we have more time and energy for the things that matter most to us. We can focus on our values, our health, our relationships, and in the process find joy in our unique journeys.

Wishing you much joy and support on your 2025 adventure!
